FBI Issues A Warning About Payday Loan Collection Scams

The FBI issued a press release today about complaints from victims of payday loan telephone collection scams. Callers say the victim is behind on their payday loan and have to pay back the loan to evade legal consequences. According to complaints received from the public, the callers have exact information about victims, including Social Security numbers, dates of birth, and much more. In several cases victims have stated they filled out online applications for other loans or credit cards right before the calls began.
The fraudsters persistently call the victim’s residence, cell phone, and place of employment. They decline to give any information about the supposed payday loans and become abusive when questioned. The callers have threatened victims with legal proceedings, arrests, and, in some cases, bodily injury if they do not pay, even taking it as far as harassing victims’ family, friends, and employers.
If you receive these calls, do not follow the caller’s instructions. Here are some steps you should take immediately:
- Notify your bank and credit card companies.
- Get hold of the three major credit bureaus and ask for an alert be put on your file.
- Contact your local police if you feel you are in immediate danger.
- File a complaint at www.IC3.gov.
